Question 1

Do I need to register for self-assessment as a reseller?

Accepted Answer

If your trading income from reselling exceeds £1,000 in a tax year, you're required to register for self-assessment with HMRC and declare that income. Even if you're below that threshold, there are situations where registering can be beneficial - for example, if you want to claim a loss or certain expenses. We'll advise you on your specific situation.

What is the £1,000 trading allowance?

Accepted Answer

HMRC allows individuals to earn up to £1,000 from trading activity - including reselling - in a tax year without paying tax on it or needing to declare it. If your income is above £1,000, you must register for self-assessment. Importantly, the allowance applies to your total trading income across all platforms combined, not per platform.

When is the self-assessment deadline?

The UK tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. For online filing, the deadline is 31 January following the end of the tax year. So for the 2024/25 tax year (ending 5 April 2025), your online return must be filed by 31 January 2026. Paper returns have an earlier deadline of 31 October. What happens if I've been selling for a few years and never declared it?

You're not alone - this is very common. HMRC has a voluntary disclosure process, and coming forward proactively is always better than waiting to be contacted. We can help you work out what you owe, prepare the necessary disclosures, and deal with HMRC on your behalf. The sooner you act, the better the outcome tends to be.

Is selling personal items taxable?

Accepted Answer

Selling personal possessions you no longer want - like old clothes or household items - is generally not taxable. The key distinction is between personal selling and trading. If you're buying items with the intention of reselling them for profit, that's trading income and needs to be declared. The line can be blurry, and we can help you understand which side of it you're on.

What is the VAT threshold and how does it affect me?

Accepted Answer

The current VAT registration threshold is £90,000 of taxable turnover in a rolling 12-month period. If your combined income from all selling activity exceeds this, you must register for VAT. This applies across all platforms - eBay, Whatnot, Vinted, TikTok Shop, Shopify, and any others. Many multi-platform sellers are closer to this threshold than they realise.

Question 7

Do I need to include all platforms when calculating my VAT turnover?

Accepted Answer

Yes. HMRC looks at your total taxable turnover from all sources. Income from eBay, Whatnot, Vinted, Amazon, TikTok Shop, Shopify, and any other selling activity all counts towards the same threshold. This is one of the most common surprises for multi-platform sellers.

What is Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT?

Making Tax Digital is HMRC's initiative to move tax record-keeping and submissions online. If you're VAT registered, you must keep digital records and submit your VAT returns using MTD-compatible software. We handle MTD compliance for all our VAT-registered clients.

What expenses can I claim as a reseller?

Accepted Answer

You can claim any expense that is wholly and exclusively for the purpose of your trading activity. For resellers, this typically includes: platform selling fees and subscriptions, postage and packaging costs, cost of goods sold, home office costs (a proportion of rent, utilities, broadband), mileage for business travel (e.g. to car boot sales or collection points), equipment like scales, printers, and cameras, and professional fees like bookkeeping. We make sure nothing is missed.

Can I claim the cost of items I bought to resell?

Accepted Answer

Yes - the cost of goods you purchase specifically to resell is a legitimate business expense. This is often called "cost of goods sold" (COGS). Keeping accurate records of what you paid for stock is essential, and it's one of the areas where good bookkeeping makes the biggest difference to your tax bill.

Can I claim for a home office?

Accepted Answer

If you use part of your home exclusively and regularly for your reselling business - for storage, photography, packing, or admin - you can claim a proportion of your household costs. HMRC has simplified flat-rate options, or we can calculate the actual proportion for you, whichever gives you the better deduction.

Question 12

What about items I received as gifts or PR packages?

Accepted Answer

If you receive products as gifts or PR packages and then sell them, the income from those sales is taxable. The cost of goods is effectively nil (since you didn't pay for them), so the full sale price is profit. If you receive gifted items as a content creator and don't sell them, the tax treatment depends on the circumstances - we can advise on your specific situation.

Question 13

Do platforms report my income to HMRC?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Since January 2024, UK digital platforms are required to report seller data to HMRC under DAC7 rules. This includes eBay, Vinted, Amazon, Etsy, and others. HMRC receives information about your sales volume and income directly from the platforms. This makes accurate record-keeping more important than ever - HMRC can cross-reference what you declare against what the platforms have reported.

Is TikTok Live income (gifts and coins) taxable?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Income received through TikTok Live - whether from gifts, coins, or live shopping sales - is taxable income. HMRC treats digital gifts and tips as trading income when received in the course of a business activity. Many creators are unaware of this, which is why we specifically cover TikTok Live income in our bookkeeping service.

Question 15

I sell on Vinted and there are no seller fees - do I still need to declare my income?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The absence of seller fees doesn't affect your tax obligations. If you're buying items to resell on Vinted and making a profit, that's trading income and needs to be declared if it exceeds the £1,000 trading allowance. Vinted also reports seller data to HMRC under DAC7 rules.

Question 16

How do Whatnot payouts work for tax purposes?

Accepted Answer

Whatnot payouts combine your sale proceeds, buyer premiums, and shipping credits, minus platform fees and shipping costs. The taxable income is your net profit - what you actually keep after all costs. We reconcile your Whatnot show reports against your bank payouts to give you an accurate picture of your taxable income from each show.
